Columbus: Airport 6S3

Columbus Airport 6S3 - Woltermann Memorial Airport, runs parallel to I-90 with a single paved runway at 10-28, 3814 x 75 ft. It's beautiful spot right along the river. The approach to rnwy 10 is interesting due to the high hill about a mile or so out to the West. Not a problem if you are at pattern altitude.

This GA airport is very accommodating for the out of town visitor. The clean and very spacious Pilot's lounge includes a full kitchen, luxurious "den" and separate dining area. There is a small library Television and VCR. I can think of much worse spots to have to wait out the weather than here.

They also currently have a choice of three different courtesy cars including a Late 80's Buick Wagon, a Mid 80's Aerostar Van, and my favorite; the 84 Ford LTD Crown Victoria.

Ennis: Airport KEKS

Easy to see from the sky this airport has one  main runway (16 -34) running parallel to the flow of the valley. The Gallatin Valley to the north is at about a 90 degree angle so the winds got a little choppy as we transitioned through the "elbow" where these two valleys and their winds intersect. Nothing unexpected in Mountain Flying.

The runway is 6600 x 75 ft. with about a 100 foot variation in altitude. 16 is uphill from 34. We were easily able to get up and down before the "Alpha" taxi way on 16. It was a little cold and windy the day we visited however the airport seems to get plenty of action on better days. Ample parking, fuel and FBO presence. The Pilot Shack is cozy yet small. Donald McCune filled us in on expansion plans for the Pilot Shack but for now it has all the necessities for trip planning, telephone, seating etc.

Townsend: Airport 8U8

2008 Montana Airport of the Year. Townsend's Airport is easy to find from the air. It sits adjacent to the rodeo arena to the south west, and is the only black asphalt around except for the highway which is actually grey and runs perpendicular to it. We visited on a cold Sunday morning with weather moving in so there wasn't much activity however we did notice 3-4 large well maintained hangars.

Being from the area we are aware of rumors of excellent prices and service from the local FBO. The grounds and asphalt are well maintained, the pilot's lounge is well equipped and it is only a few short miles to town via highway 12.

The newly resurfaced runway at the Townsend City-County Airport  is one of many features that helped the airport win the 2008 Montana Airport of the Year award.
